Dallas Cowboys Roster Overview: Wide Receiver

Wide Receivers
Players - Roy Williams, Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Same Hurd, Kevin Ogletree, Jessie Holley, Manny Johnson

Roy Williams
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $5,109,971 Million, Signed through 2013
Date of Birth - 12/20/1981
2010 Stats - Played in 15 games, 37 Receptions, 530 Receiving Yards, 14.3 Average Yards per Reception, 5.8 Average Yards after the Catch, 2 Receptions of over 40 yards, 25 First Down, 5 Touchdowns, 3 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - Roy Williams started off the season fairly well or at least better than he's previous years in Dallas. But once Romo went down with the collarbone injury, so did his production. I, like many I'm sure, was pretty surprised by that because backup Quarterback Jon Kitna is Roy's guy. I believe he's underachieved for far too long and he might not get much better, which would make him a monumental bust. I think Jerry wanted him more than Garrett did. On the outside, it appears as though the relationship between Garrett and Roy isn't very good. Roy called out the offensive scheme and the play calling(which is Garrett) on more than one occasion. To me, it just doesn't seem like Roy cares much. He had the reputation of not working hard when he came here and while there have been reports that claim that he works as hard as anybody in Dallas, it just does not show up for whatever reason. Part of that has to do with Garrett, I believe. I don't think Garrett uses Roy correctly and Roy seems to be running at half speed. To make matters worse for Roy, he's got three other players who are better/more dangerous and consistent pass catchers on his team.(Austin, Bryant, and Witten)

Roy will be making about $6.8 million in base salary over the remaining three years of his contract, but still I believe you've got to keep him for at least one more year. You've got too much invested, there is potential there for him to put up some good numbers, age isn't a factor, and releasing him causes some depth issues at Wide Receiver. Still, this has got to be the biggest error on the Cowboys' roster when you compare the contract to the production.

Roster Spot - Safe

Miles Austin

Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $8.54 Million, Signed through 2016
Date of Birth - 6/30/1984
2010 Stats - Played in 16 games, 69 Receptions, 1,041 Receiving Yards, 15.1 Average Yards per Reception, 6.4 Average Yards after the Catch, 2 Receptions of over 40 yards, 50 First Down, 7 Touchdowns, 1 Fumble

Individual Analysis - It seems like there's a common theme among Cowboys players. They play well to get a contract and then once they get it, their play declines. Fortunately, Miles wasn't that bad last year. In fact, he was pretty good. He finished with over 1,000 yards and he's a dangerous player when he has the ball. But still, you'd like to see more yards and some more touchdowns. He didn't have nearly as many big plays as last year, but he still poses a threat regardless. He's just a ball player. He plays to the whistle and goes about things the right way.

Roster Spot - Lock

Dez Bryant

Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $1,112,500 Million, Signed through 2014
Date of Birth - 11/4/1988
2010 Stats - Played in 12 games, 45 Receptions, 561 Receiving Yards, 12.5 Average Yards per Reception, 4.7 Average Yards after the Catch, 3 Receptions of over 40 yards, 27 First Down, 6 Touchdowns, 0 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - Dez came in, suffered a high ankle sprain in training camp, and missed every preseason game. That's pretty big for any rookie, but for a receiver, who's learning curve might be the biggest there is coming from college, it's huge. Still Bryant performed about as well as could've been expected. He's physically everything you could possibly want in a receiver. He's got the speed, the hands, the body control, the ball control, the run after the catch ability, elite return skills, and the competitiveness to be an elite receiver. New Wide Receivers coach, Jimmy Robinson will be the best thing that every happened to Dez. If he can stay injury free and keep his head on straight, which means, A) Keep Garrett and Robinson in his earn and not Jerry, and B) Make sure he learns from Miles, not Roy, Dez WILL be a star.

Roster Spot - Lock

Sam Hurd

Contract Status - 2011 Free Agent
Date of Birth - 4/24/1985
2010 Stats - Played in 15 games, 14 Receptions, 120 Receiving Yards, 8.6 Average Yards per Reception, 5.1 Average Yards after the Catch, 0 Receptions of over 40 yards,11 First Down, 0 Touchdowns, 0 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - Sam Hurd is probably one of the smartest players on the team. He knows every receiver spot on the team. And he's definitely one of the teams top Special Teams player and that's how he's stuck around for the last 5 years. I like him as a player. He'll do anything you ask of him and he's a fighter. He'll make acrobatic catches, block for you, and go up for the ball. Problem is, he very limited athletically. I think he could carve out a decent role on a team. Unfortunately, it might not be this one. His role on this team is heavily Special Teams based. He wants a role in an offense and I don't blame him. I'd like to have him, but unless the Cowboys offer him a decent contract, he wont be back.

Roster Spot - Up in the Air

Kevin Ogletree

Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $480,000, 2012 Free Agent
Date of Birth - 8/5/1987
2010 Stats - Played in 6 games, 3 Receptions, 34 Receiving Yards, 11.3 Average Yards per Reception, 2.7 Average Yards after the Catch, 0 Receptions of over 40 yards, 2 First Down, 0 Touchdowns, 0 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - Ogletree had his role reduced after Dez Bryant arrived last year, but I think he's a decent 4th receiver in my eyes. He's extremely quick in and out of his breaks, but does he have a firm grasp on how to play the game? Can he get off the jam? And there's only so many balls to go around. The Cowboys try to insert him into the Special Teams, but he isn't anything special.

Roster Spot - Up in the Air

Jesse Holley

Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $385,000, 2012 Free Agent
Date of Birth - 1/8/1984
2010 Stats - Played in 12 games, but didn't record any stats.

Individual Analysis - "Mr. 4th and Long" was used as strictly a Special Teams player in 2010 and he wasn't too bad at it. That alone could buy him a few years on the roster and allow him to develop his skills as a receiver. The thing is, he's already been here a few years, so time is running out. I think he'll really have to compete for his job in training camp. And if it's close, the younger player is going to get the nod.

Roster Spot - Gone

Manny Johnson

Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $405,000, 2012 Free Agent
Date of Birth - 10/14/1986
2010 Stats - Played in 2 games, 1 Receptions, 6 Receiving Yards, 6 Average Yards per Reception, 1 Average Yards after the Catch, 0 Receptions of over 40 yards,0 First Down, 0 Touchdowns, 0 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - I haven't seem Manny Johnson play very much as his only action was one catch during the regular season and Preseason. He's a developmental receiver, with a low base salary. He might stick on the practice squad for another year if nobody better comes along and the coaches like his potential.

Roster Spot - Up in the Air

Group Analysis - The arrival of new Wide Receivers Coach Jimmy Robinson and the return of Tony Romo will make the passing game more efficient. Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are both explosive receivers who can turn a 10 gain into a 50 yard gain. Roy Williams on paper, should be a good possessive receiver. Whether things actually fall into place for him, well that remains to be seen. I'd bet against that at this point. Sam Hurd will probably leave via Free Agency. And Kevin Ogletree, Jesse Holley, and Manuel Johnson need to continue to improve. Don't be surprised if those three are not here week 1.

Dallas Cowboys Roster Overview: Running Back

Running Backs
Players - Marion Barber, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice, Chris Gronkowski

Marion Barber
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $4.25 Million, Signed through 2014
Date of Birth - 6/10/1983
2010 Stats - Played in 13 games, 113 Rushing Attempts, 374 Yards, 3.3 Average Yards per Rush, 4 Touchdowns, 11 Receptions, 49 Yards, 0 Receiving Touchdowns, 0 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - The player who used to be called "The Barbarian" is coming of a year in which he posted career lows in every major category. The offensive line blocked as poorly in the running game as I've ever seen, but still Marion doesn't seem like the same player he was a few years ago. He only carried the ball more than 15 times in a game only once(17 Vs. Houston) and he had less than 10 carries in 8 games, while missing 3 due to injury. That's a big problem. To complicate matters, he's on the books to make $4.25 millions in base salary. That's far too much for a 4th Quarter/short-yardage/goal line back. I think he's stats will be up in 2011, but probably not to the extent to warrant the zeros on his contract. I think he needs to take a pay cut or find a new home.

Roster Spot - Up in the Air(Pay Cut or Released)

Felix Jones
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $1,023,750, Signed through 2012
Date of Birth - 5/8/1987
2010 Stats - Played in 16 games, 185 Rushing Attempts, 800 Yards, 4.3 Average Yards per Rush, 1 Touchdown, 48 Receptions, 450 Yards, 1 Receiving Touchdown, 2 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - Again, he had to run behind an offensive line that generally got manhandled by the opposition. Jones still had a pretty good year. He finished with 1,250 yards total yards. It's surprising he finished with only 2 touchdowns. He's got the skills to be a very good back. And I believe he's a favorite of both Garrett and Jerry, which bodes well for him. His cap number is very low considering his production. Improve the offensive line and continue to try to find innovative ways to get him the ball and good things will happen for the offense.

Roster Spot - Lock

Tashard Choice
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $555,000, 2012 Free Agent
Date of Birth - 11/20/1984
2010 Stats - Played in 16 games, 66 Rushing Attempts, 243 Yards, 3.7 Average Yards per Rush, 3 Touchdown, 17 Receptions, 109 Yards, 0 Receiving Touchdowns, 1 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - I've deemed Tashard Choice the Cowboys' best overall running back for quite a few years now, and despite his 2010 campaign, I still believe in that statement. I believe his fumble at the end of the first half in the opener against Washington defined his season, which if true, was stupid. And of course, when he did get his chances, he had to work behind a porous offensive line. I love everything about Tashard. He's not going to ever be an all-star, but he should have a big part in the offense because he just gets the job done.

Roster Spot - Lock

Chris Gronkowski
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $405,000, Signed through 2012
2010 Stats - Played in 14 games, 5 Rushing Attempts, 17 Yards, 3.4 Average Yards per Rush, 0 Touchdown, 7 Receptions, 35 Yards, 1 Receiving Touchdown, 0 Fumbles

Individual Analysis - Chris Gronkowski is extremely tough to judge because all he does in this offense is block. He occasionally gets a pass thrown his way as a check down or off play-action. Even rarer he gets a carry. Like Tashard Choice, his 2010 season will be remember by one play. His missed block on the Giants' Michael Boley, cost Tony Romo 9 games. As a Fullback, he's nothing special. He's just the best they've got for their money at this point. He'll be in a battle with everyone and anyone who they bring in as an undrafted Free Agent.

Roster Spot - Up in the Air

Group Analysis - This is a pretty strong unit. The Cowboys currently have three players who have fairly significant game experience and in todays NFL, you need three backs who you can trust. As I said before though, I'd do something with Barber. I just don't see it in him anymore. I'd get some young blood in there to back up Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Serviceable Running Backs are relatively easy to find. You don't need a great Running Back to have a great Running Game. I'd take three good ones over one great one. Next year, the workload needs to be split more evenly than last year. Felix is the more dangerous player, so naturally he's going to get the ball. But Tashard wont make as many mistakes and he's very trustable. As far as Gronkowski, he's who's there at the moment. I think it's 50/50 on whether he'll be replaced by another rookie free agent.

Dallas Cowboys Roster Overview: Quarterback

After an extremely disappointing season that saw the Cowboys finish 6-10, it's obvious the Cowboys need to make many changes. Wade's already gone, though I don't believe he was the biggest of the problems. The players quit on him and the thought around the league is the Cowboys roster is going to look drastically different next season. I'm going to play as Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones and give my input on each position group, each player, and determine who needs to be demoted, let go, or anything in between by giving them one of 4 classifications.

"Lock" means there's no chance I'm letting them go.
"Safe" means I'm not counting on something better coming along and chances are, I'm keeping them.
"Up in the Air" means either I'm not sold on their talent or their contract outweighs their production.
"Gone" means they simply need replaced or their contract is up and I expect them to sign elsewhere.

Again, this is what I think, not necessarily what I think will happen. I'll be starting with the Quarterbacks.

Quarterback
Players - Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee

Tony Romo
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $9 Million, Signed through 2013
Date of Birth - 4/21/1980
2010 Stats - Played in 7 Games, 1605 Passing Yards, 69.5 Completion %, 7.5 Average Yards per Completion, 11 Touchdowns, 7 Interceptions, and a 94.9 QB Rating

Individual Analysis -  Tony Romo is the starter. Duh, I know. He's the franchise and everything offensively revolves around him. I expect him to reestablish himself as a top 10 Quarterback next year.

Roster Spot - Lock

Jon Kitna
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $2.6 Million, Signed through 2013
Date of Birth - 9/21/1972
2010 Stats - Played in 10 games, 2365 Passing Yards, 65.7 completion %, 7.4 Average Yards per Completion, 16  Touchdowns, 12 Interceptions, and a 88.9 QB Rating

Individual Analysis - He was thrown into a tough situation, but he responded better than I thought he would. He's definitely on the older side at 38, but he's reliable. He knows the offense and has plenty of work put in with these players, which gives him the edge on anybody else behind Romo. I don't like him as an every week starter, but as Romo's backup, you could do a lot worse.

Roster Spot - Safe

Stephen McGee
Contract Status - 2011 Base Salary: $480,000, Signed through 2012
Date of Birth - 9/27/1985
2010 Stats - Played in 2 games, 238 Passing Yards, 50.0 Completion %, 5.4 Average Yards per Completion, 2 Touchdowns, 0 Interceptions, 81.4 QB Rating

Individual Analysis - Stephen McGee has all of the tools physically and I was impresses in his ability to take care of the football, but he seems like he doesn't read things very quickly and is indecisive. He's still young and his problems are consistent with being a young Quarterback. If I was Garrett, I'd give him another year. I believe in Parcells' rule of giving a player 3 years to prove himself.

Roster Spot - Up in the air

Group Analysis - This unit is set up pretty good. Romo is a franchise Quarterback and then you've got the seasoned veteran behind him in Jon Kitna. The Cowboys will bring in another Quarterback(probably an undrafted free agent) to compete with McGee, be a training camp arm, and possibly earn a spot on the practice squad. Maybe the rookie impresses and replaces McGee on the 53 man roster. It'd suck to give up on a 4th round pick so soon, but if you keep the best players.

Analysis - Rob Ryan is a big name. So naturally, he's going to enthrall fans by that alone. Statistically, he's very mediocre. His run defenses have ranked 25th or worse every year as a coordinator. I mean, honestly, everything across the board has been bad. He had the top ranked pass defense in in 2006 and the 8th in 2007. But besides that, nothing really impresses me. I've seen him on the sideline, and as a Ryan, it's no real surprise, but he's a fiery guy. He comes from a good defensive coaching pedigree, so I'm sure he can get his point across to his players. I just wonder about his ability to put together a game plan, make in-game adjustments, and how well he uses his players. I've read that he's not very good at using his players like they're supposed too.

He's certainly a big name, but his track records leaves a lot to be desired. I know, Oakland and Cleveland aren't exactly overflowing with talent, but even still. Unless he didn't have any say in the defense, which I'd find pretty hard to believe, even though in Oakland he had Al Davis running the team in the ground. In Cleveland he was working under Eric Mangini, who is a defensive guy. So he might have had his hand in the defense somewhere. I wouldn't blame him.

This hire would make a lot of sense and maybe he's just a product of trying to coaching on a bad team. He'd have everything he could possibly want here. There's no reason he can't succeed in Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys need to improve in April

As anybody watching the Cowboys play this season could see, this team needs change. And if you didn't see them play even once, shame on you for one, just simply look at their record and their place in the division. A team with so much 'talent' to finish so poorly is unacceptable.

Jason Garrett has taken the challenge and at times, seemingly, the burden of building and sustaining a playoff caliber Cowboys team. The Cowboys have the money and the glamor and the history to lure talent through free agency. Unfortunately, you cannot build a team through free agency. It's too expensive and the players, generally, don't make it to free agency unless there's issues somewhere. You're team will also get old very quickly if you continue to try to build through adding veteran players.

You have to build teams through the draft. It's tough, but it's absolutely essential if you want to have a good team for years to come. And the Cowboys haven't really had a successful one, by my standards, since 2005 and even that's kinda iffy.

There's not many players who are still in the league, much less on the Cowboys roster. A lot of people will point to Jerry Jones and his perceived lack of football knowledge and he definitely deserves some of the blame. How much, is anyone's guess. Whatever the reason, it's imperative that the Cowboys improve on who the choose through the draft.

I'm not saying their struggles through the draft in recent memory are the reason the Cowboys finished 6-10 this season. My thoughts on their downfall have been fairly well documented. I believe not being able to draft properly has kept this team, when good, from being great.

This team has talent. It's on the older side, but again, they have the players to win a lot of games. It's the coaches job to get those players to mesh and play as a unit. It's his job to get the most out of those players every day. It's his job to get them to focus on the task at hand. And it's the owners job, and in this case, the GM's job also, to allow the coach to do his job.

Drafting better will just makes things easier for everyone involved.
